The issue of slum housing is rampant in the city of Los Angeles — because of gentrification, many landlords neglect regular wear and tear maintenance of a building, allow for vermin infestation, going as far to shut down water and electricity for days, and including verbal and physical violence to intimade and coerce tenants out of their rent controlled units. All in efforts to wipe out clean a building that is occupied by low income usually people of color families; to then sell an empty building at market rate in this hot gentrified land, or turn the building around toand rent to higher earning tenants.
