Disabilism: A Disease Embedded Within the Government

Posted by Jack Stephens on May 4, 2007

Steve Kuusisto blogs about the systematic discrimination of people with disabilities within the government in his blog Planet of the Blind:

Disablism is in my view the organized and determined use of power to prevent people with disabilities from becoming full members of society.

I believe along with tens of thousands of other people who have disabilities that the highest court in our land is guilty of disablism.

Justices like Antonin Scalia believe that people with disabilities should be grateful just to be carried up a flight of stairs when there’s no ramp available in a federal building. You can look it up.

Language and Class

Posted by Jack Stephens on May 4, 2007

Madhat, a blogger from Bangolore, writes about a video he saw at a charity/theatre event in India in his blog My life, my words:

I noticed something interesting in the video. The founder and some other people who looked to be members of the board (they were mostly businessmen) spoke to the camera in English but the testimonials of the kids were in Kannada with English subtitles! Now why is that?

The elite, the rich and the upper class are the ones who have access to good english education and the lower class can converse only in the local language. Balraj Sahni was right. English is the new Sanskrit.
