Becoming a “WOC Feminist”

Posted by Jack Stephens on April 2, 2007

zooeylive writes about her transformation into a women of color feminist after moving from India to the United States:

I never thought of myself as a WOC until I came to this country. Similarly “Women of Color feminism” was not a term that existed in my political lingo until I was 22 or so.I came to the writings of US based wocs during a very crucial period of my life…I began to think that yes, intersectionality is the answer. I tried to embrace bell hooks’ notion of “white supremacist imperialist capitalist patriarchy.” Indeed, there is no way you can analyze capitalism if you leave out race or gender! And this is the approach that I have tried to embrace in my own work—academic, artistic, activist.

The Bi-Racial Tag

Posted by Jack Stephens on April 2, 2007

Rachel, in her blog Rachel’s Tavern, writes about her dissertation and arguments against her dissertation concerning racial identity and multi-racial people:

Dave’s belief is that mixed race people mixed ancestry should organize their own groups, and they should see themselves as distinction from African Americans. I have no objection to organizing some multiracial groups, but I also thinking that many of the needs, concerns, and issues overlap with those of other people of color. Personally, I do not think it would be beneficial to try to create a new racial group akin to the “colored’ population in South Africa.

The Intricacies of Zimbabwe

Posted by Jack Stephens on April 2, 2007

Kameelah writes about the intracacies of the situation in Zimbabwe and on speaking out against the Mugabe government:

If we choose to speak, how do we speak in a way that does not invite neocolonial intervention, or mimic Western neo-con and neo-liberal narratives? I say love Black folks enough to fix the ugly. Let’s not pimp Black solidarity and Pan-Africanism until it’s so crippled that it’s meaningless and retired to the museums of embalmed anachronisms and clichés.
