One’s Own White Privilege

Posted by Jack Stephens on February 26, 2007

Eric Stoller writes about his own privilege and how to confront it:

The second we truly realize that we are privileged means that we also realize that our privileges come at the expense of someone else and that these privileges do damage to those who are privileged. Systems of oppression like racism, sexism, and heterosexism could not exist if heterosexual white men gave up their privileges and to do that, they would have to give up their power.

  1. Thanks for the link. It took me a long time to get to that particular paragraph. I couldn’t of written that piece without Janet Helms, bell hooks, and Tim Wise.

Good luck with the blog. I like the idea of a Social Justice aggregator.

Wow, that is a covert call for the neutering/and/or castration of white men if I ever heard it.I ubderstand that among males macaques( a type of monkey) competition and violence is focused on tearing the testicles of ones’opponent’ off, but even they aren’t dumb enough to call for their own castration…scary slippery slope he propses here.

  3. I’m not sure how a call for men to give up their un-earned privileges gets mutated into a violent act against white men? It sounds to me that Mensch is a white guy who is afraid to deal with the idea that he benefits from a system of un-earned privileges, most of which he probably is not even aware of…
